I apologize to my loyal followers, though you may be few-and-far between, for not updating in an eternity. Although you haven’t seen the fruits of my efforts just yet, I have kept myself incredibly busy with school, more school and now an internship — in sunny Phoenix, AZ!

The truth is, I have been interning full-time at a public relations agency, Olson Communications, since June. I am in love with the work that has consumed me and am trying my hardest not to let the 118-degree summer heat consume me, too!

Feel free to check out my posts on the Olson Communications Blog and leave a comment to ignite some good-old PR conversation!

Also, follow me on Twitter to see what I’m up to every day, the articles that get my brain revving and some good resources for fellow PR professionals.

Honestly, pop music has become boring. Too much pink bubblegum, girly and smiley stuff makes me want to reach for the barf bag. Don’t get me wrong, some of the songs have fun beats and can really put me in a good mood after one play, but sometimes I need something with a little spice.
Some artists like Lady Gaga, Pink and The Ting Tings have used their feisty attitudes to bring themselves to the top of the charts. Other artists may be bringing themselves down.

Photo of Lily Allen

Lily Allen, British pop star, is quite a controversial one. She sings fun and upbeat songs like “Smile”… when she’s drunk. (By the way, watch the “Smile” video and you will think twice about the song)
And she isn’t hiding it either. You can find her proclaiming her tipsiness at almost every concert. Like her concert in Seattle last week, you can expect smoking, drinking and vulgar behavior at every show.
Watch Lily’s interview with CBCtv back in 2007 to get a taste of her attitude. It starts getting good around 2:50.

Early last year, her drinking became a concern to many. When she became pregnant with Chemical Brothers DJ Ed Simons child, she quit drinking. Unfortunately, a miscarriage proceeded, but her plan to quit drinking did not end there.
In many interviews, Allen credited her feelings of loneliness and depression to the lack of substance abuse in her life. However, her concern for herself and her own good soon faded away and she is back to drinking again.

Her most recent blunders

Last week, Lily had more than one drunk incident.
In Salt Lake City, she apparently fell ill after her concert and had to be carried out by one of her guards.
A few days later in Denver, Allen reportedly had a tough time making it up a set of stairs.

This is going to be tough to clean up

If I were Lily’s publicist, I would probably see my job slipping away from me pretty quickly. Although her entire persona is based on being controversial and risky, she is letting it get out of hand way too often. Her drunk antics almost every time she is out in public are beginning to take a toll on her reputation.

Having risky music is one thing, but living the way she is might have an effect on her career sooner than she thinks.
Could PR suggest anything short of rehab that could save her image?

I write, live and breathe entertainment. I love it. I try to keep up as much as I can. So, naturally, my most visited Web sites on my bookmark bar are Perez Hilton and Pajiba, an entertainment blog that stretches to say everything you thought but couldn’t say out loud. Twitter and Facebook come in a close second place.

Screen capture of Pajiba. Read the top of the window. See what I mean?

You can only imagine how I feel when I hear about one of these Web sites on one of the others. Like a dog, my ears perk up. Social media and celebs? Yup, I’m writing about it again.

The Tweet on the Street

As I scroll through pages of Perez’s (and his other writers’) sassy gossip, one headline catches my eye. Demi Helps a Potential Suicide Victim on Twitter. Really? I have to read more closely.

Apparently it’s a good thing Demi Moore and her husband, Ashton Kutcher, love Twitter as much as they do. According to Perez, a message to Demi from the user “Sandieguy” read:

“Getting a knife, a big one that is sharp. Going to cut my arm down the whole arm so it doesn’t waste time”

Moore, all the way from Southern France, retweeted and replied, “Hope you are joking.”

As some of Moore’s 435,000 followers read the messages, they became just as disturbed as she was and began calling the San Jose Police Department. About an hour later, Moore posted another message:

Moore's Twitter picture

“Everyone I was very torn about responding or retweeting that woman’s post but felt uncomfortable just letting it go”

The San Jose PD tracked the messages to a 41-year-old female and officers were then sent to her address to check on her welfare. Officials say that there were several phone calls about the tweets from all different cities.

Luckily, the calls reached the police department in time and officers were able to get to the address before the woman had brought any injuries upon herself. The woman, however, was hospitalized and brought in for psychiatric evaluation to prevent harm.

Moore then tweeted:

“Thanks everyone for reaching out to the San Jose PD I am told they are aware and no need to call anymore. I do not know this woman…. And if it is a joke it is not funny and nor is this an appropriate outlet for such a serious matter Time for us to move on.”

Life-Saving Celebrity

After Moore’s disclosure of the tweets, people began praising her for, in a way, saving a woman’s life. Husband Ashton Kutcher then tweeted about the situation:

“Wifey reported a suicide attempt based on a tweet she got and saved someone’s life. The woman is in the hospital now.”

Charlie’s Angel to the rescue!

The San Jose woman is now thanking Moore and others for reaching out and pushing her to get the help she needed. She released a statement to Radar Online saying:

“I’ve always been a fan of Demi Moore and she did an excellent job in helping me and she deserves a lot of praise. I would also like to thank Daniel Morton, the original Twitter user that reached out to me and everyone else on the network that offered their support. I’m really grateful that so many people helped me during a time of need.”

Social PResponsibility

Although Moore did not know the woman, she reached out to someone who may not have otherwise gotten the help she needed. The woman is now seeking aid through Suicide.org thanks to the intervention that followed the disturbing tweets.

On her own, without the help of PR, Moore managed to better her image and reputation by simply responding to something that she could have easily ignored. By stepping out beyond her role as an actress and interacting with people through social media, she has boosted the public’s perception of her.

Looking at this post as an answer to last week’s question, Twitter and other social networks can be used to positively influence opinions of celebrities. It is just a matter of how celebrities use them that determines whether or not the results are positive or negative.

What is your opinion on Moore’s involvement on Twitter?

Also, Stephenson Strategies Blog points out other ways organizations use Twitter to potentially save lives. Definitely something to check out.

Do you know of any other organizations that use Twitter in emergency response?

Recently, buzz about social media is everywhere you turn. Companies, like Skittles, are gearing campaigns completely toward the Internet. Hot new start-ups like The Printed Blog are proving blogs are booming, while newspapers and magazines are shutting their doors. Even my mom and every family member I never knew friends me on Facebook now.

Lots of celebrities are getting in on the action too. Actors and musicians are writing blogs and using Twitter regularly. But, is it as good for their image as they intend? Let’s take a look at a few popular tech-ies:

Getting the Scoop from Goop

Gwyneth Paltrow has a new blog, Goop. Regardless of the title, the blog that publishes weekly newsletters is actually quite enjoyable for women. Postings range from explaining workout plans to healthy recipes and sharing film reviews. The site categorizes posts into what Gwyneth thinks we should make, go, get, do, be and see.

Screenshot of Goop Web site

Following Mayer on Twitter

John Mayer at the VH1 Save the Music Foundation

Singer John Mayer has made his presence on Twitter very apparent to many. With 451,000 followers and 450 updates to date, I think it’s safe to say Mayer likes Twitter.

Unfortunately, rumor has it the star liked it too much and it may or may not have added to his recent split with actress, Jennifer Aniston. Supposedly, immediately following her phone-call break up was when Mayer tweeted “this heart didn’t come with instructions.“

After the media pounced on this information, Mayer responded by saying, “[Twitter is] inherently silly and it’s inherently dumb.” However, he continues to tweet daily. Interesting.

Getting Gossip from the Queen Himself

Self-proclaimed Queen of Gossip, Perez Hilton

Perez Hilton is known by most as the “queen” of Hollywood gossip and vandalizing photos of the stars on his blog. With posts in the double digits almost every day, tons of gossip-hungry girls turn to him for their daily dose of celebrity stories.

Speculation arose that Perez is not even writing for his own blog anymore. Three ghostwriters under his name have allegedly taken over, while he is out mingling in Hollywood.

For This, Celebrity PR Will Always Exist

Although it is commendable that these celebrities have tried to put themselves out there and let people see them as they are, it reinforces the fact that public relations will always be a vital part to a celebrity’s fame.

As Defamer’s Owen Thomas pointed out about celebrities and social media, “every tweet will be media-coached. Every blog will be relentlessly edited – and then have typos inserted for authenticity.” This is because celebrities are, in fact, a brand in themselves that need to be monitored and carefully placed.

Questions arise in the ethical arena here, though. Twitter and blogs are meant to be honest about contributors to content. Is it ethical for celebrities to have ghostwriters or publicists edit every tweet they want to put up? Or should it be more accepted that celebrities are just like us — flaws and all?

Tell me what you think.

Extra! Extra! Lindsay Lohan has chosen a new rehab facility in which to fulfill her probation requirements.

Photo of Lohan after July 2007 arrest for suspicion of drunk driving and posession of cocaine.

Confusion arose when an arrest warrant was issued on Friday, March 13, after the star missed three mandatory alcohol counseling sessions for her DUI arrest in 2007. However, Lohan’s lawyer, Chapman Holley, cleared things up Monday. The warrant was lifted after he explained that Lohan had a “personality conflict” and had entered another alcohol program at a facility in Glendale, CA.

Judge Marsha Revel stated that Lohan is successfully satisfying all conditions of her probation and has been compliant with her program.

But, are we all glad that she is sticking with her program?

Lindsay’s father, Michael Lohan, isn’t, and made sure to put in his two cents about the situation. He said that the best thing for Lindsay is a “long-term rehab,” not a once-a-week stint for court orders.

Although many people criticize Michael Lohan for his involvement/lack of involvement in Lindsay’s life, this time I think he’s right.

I applaud Lindsay for remaining compliant with court orders, but photos are snapped almost every weekend of the star drinking and partying at clubs with DJ girlfriend Sam Ronson.

And so the question arises: Is it all just a publicity stunt?

It seems like every single day we see another celebrity enter rehab or get arrested. Some celebs, like Lindsay, have been in rehab multiple times. Here are some other rehab-ers:

Kirsten Dunst

Amy Winehouse

Nicole Richie

Britney Spears

Joaquin Phoenix

Eva Mendes

…and many more.

Clearly, they aren’t getting better. So, what’s wrong here?

Is Hollywood glamorizing rehab?

Sad to say, but it might be true. The frequency of celebrities going to treatment facilities is growing. It’s hard to believe that after only a few weeks they are cured of any addictions and can go back to normal life, just like that.

There has even been a TV show on VH1 called “Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew.” Celebrities, or “characters” as it refers to them, have their time in rehab with Dr. Drew Pinsky documented and broadcast nationally. Some familiar faces such as Brigitte Nielsen, Ricco “Suave” Rodriguez and Chyna are among the recovering personalities.

Here is part of Dr. Drew’s rebuttal at those who criticize the show:

Well, here’s my take…

I feel as if PR has taken the role of cleaning up the stars’ negative images, but has been missing the most vital part — getting these people to live a healthy lifestyle and truly bettering themselves. After all, the foundation of public relations is building solid relationships with your client and key publics.

Negative perceptions about these stars reoccur every time they fall back into bad habits, and reputation clean-up starts all over again. I know that a PR professional can’t change a celebrity’s lifestyle for them, but something more must be done.

What more could be done to help? On the other hand, when do you think a PR professional has gone too far?

Post a comment and let me know what you think.

If you are anything like me, finding your dream job and landing an amazing internship is number one on the priority list. Guys dream of the sports internship where they get to meet their favorite football players or get to see LeBron dunk every day. Plenty of girls can imagine living “The Devil Wears Prada” type of life and interning for a major fashion magazine.

Well, for those of you living in a dream bubble, or just for reality/Sunday night TV lovers, the Style Network has a new show for you — Running in Heels. The show, which premiered on Sunday, March 1, features three platform-clad interns working for Marie Claire Magazine. Of course, the highlights of the show are Editor-in-Chief (and so-called “Simon Cowell of fashion”), Joanna Coles, and Project Runway judge and Fashion Director, Nina Garcia.

Cast of Running In Heels

The show is a compilation of behind-the-scenes looks at what goes into the making of the magazine. Since Running in Heels gives a wider view than other similar shows, it is interesting to compare the work of successful editors against that of three new interns and how they deal with the pressures of working and trying to impress their boss.

Below is a trailer about the show:

Like the trailer said, welcome to the bottom. College students and recent graduates need to realize what it takes to be recognized in any industry, and that is working your way up. However, even finding a spot on the bottom can prove to be a tough task to accomplish.

Some Tips to Finding an Internship

Let everyone know you are trying to find a job

Someone you know always, without fail, knows someone, who knows someone, who knows someone who can get you an interview. So let everyone you can know that you are on the hunt. The more people you tell, the more opportunities will come your way.

Polish your resume

It is so important that your resume is absolutely 100% perfect. No spelling errors. No formatting follies. Period. Always have someone else look over it as well — we often miss our own mistakes. Adding a touch of design is always helpful too. If you are experienced in Photoshop or InDesign, go ahead and try something a little bit out of the ordinary (don’t go too crazy). I mean, can you imagine looking at boring, black-and-white Word documents all day? A hint of color might catch the right person’s eye.

Network, network, network

I’m sure you’ve heard it before, but meet everyone you possibly can. Groups and clubs at college have networking events with local professionals all the time. If you get yourself involved you are bound to meet someone who would be happy to refer you, or even hire you. Always look professional and keep your resume on hand because you never know who might ask for it.

Growing your social network on the Web is just as important. Connect with professionals in all the cities you would be interested in working. By building relationships with people through Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn, it will put a face and personality to the name on your resume. The Interactive Insights Group offers advice on growing your social media network.

Set personal deadlines

By setting deadlines for yourself, you will be kept on track. Keep a planner with absolutely solid dates to have tasks completed by. Set a date for:

completing your resume and cover letter

obtaining letters of recommendation

sending in applications

following up with companies

Make sure you keep all materials organized and write down the companies you have applied to and the name of who you spoke to for later reference.

Don’t limit yourself

Keep your options open! Apply to as many places as possible. If it interests you, why not give it a shot? It can’t hurt. We all have “dream” companies that we would like to work for. But even though your heart is set on one company, apply to other companies that are similar too.

Do your homework

Research the company you are applying to before you apply. Always target your cover letter to a specific company and explain what you can do for them specifically. Companies know that you want to gain experience, but the famous question will arise, what’s in it for them?

Also, come to an interview prepared to ask questions. Know as much as you can about the job you are applying for and the company, and get some questions together to fill in the holes.

At the End of the Day

Be comfortable, confident and proud of all the hard work you poured into preparing yourself. And most of all, relax. You will do great!

This is about the time I thank Kent State for forcing me to take a Law class in advertising and public relations. Otherwise, I might end up in a pair of shoes I don’t want to be in, like British baby-stroller company, Silver Cross, Ltd..

Lopez and Anthony with twins, Max and Emme. Photo courtesy of people.com.

It was reported yesterday by MSNBC that actress/singer Jennifer Lopez and husband Marc Anthony have filed a $30 million lawsuit against the buggy-makers. The two claim the company has been using a photo of the couple pushing their twins, Max and Emme, in a Silver Cross stroller to help sell the product on the company’s Web site and in other media.

On the technical side, the lawsuit states that Silver Cross “knowingly and intentionally misappropriated and used the names, images, likenesses and photographs of Lopez and Anthony to market and sell Defendants’ line of high-end baby carriages throughout the world.”

The Lawsuit

By using the couple’s photographs and recognition, the company could potentially earn a lot of loot on their behalf. And to say the least, Lopez and Anthony aren’t very happy.

The lawsuit consists of eight complaints:

violation of civil code

misappropriation of the common law right of publicity

false designation of origin

dilution of common law trademark

copyright infringement

unjust enrichment

accounting

preliminary and permanent injunction

The $30 million total comes from damages on six-of-the-eight claims, attorneys fees and profits from the sale of the strollers.

Key Lesson: Pay attention in your law classes. You never want to have this kind of debt.

What other famous law cases that relate to PR have you seen in the media?

Now, here is a classic case of crisis communications if I ever asked for one. I’m sure we have all heard about the back-and-forth ping pong game of allegations being thrown around at Chris Brown for charges of assault.

If not, here’s a little debriefing for you:

Rihanna and Chris Brown sitting together at the Clive Davis Annual Pre-Grammy Gala just hours before the incident.

On Sunday, Feb. 8, it was reported that nominees Rihanna and Chris Brown would not be attending the 51st annual Grammy Awards after involvement in a “car accident.”

Early Sunday morning, after the Clive Davis pre-Grammy party in Los Angeles, it was reported that Brown was being investigated on charges of assault on an unidentified woman. While driving through an upscale neighborhood in the area, Brown and the woman allegedly got into a heated argument that escalated to violence and yelling. A resident nearby heard the commotion and called the police. When the police arrived, the woman, who suffered visible injuries, identified Brown as her attacker, but he had already left the scene.

After 7 p.m. that day, Brown and his attorney went to the police station to turn himself in for questioning. He was booked and released on $50,000 bail.

After the announcement that neither star would attend the Grammy’s surfaced, speculation followed. Rihanna’s publicist issued a statement that she was “well” and thanked her fans for their support and concern. However, no statement had been offered that confirmed that both of the pop-stars were involved in the same case.

The stars’ endorsements

The next day, Brown was dropped by Wrigley’s for his endorsement of Double Mint Gum. The company released a statement saying, “we have made the decision to suspend the current advertising featuring Brown and any related marketing communications until the matter is resolved.”

On the other hand, CoverGirl cosmetics ads featuring Rihanna are still being run nationally. It is not known whether or not the campaign will continue.

PR finally shows its face — it’s about time

It was not until later last week that either side spoke out about the situation. Rihanna’s father, Ronald Fenty, spoke to People.com about the singer’s condition.

“There is some bruising. She will be alright. I think so,” Fenty said. He also confirmed that his daughter had returned to her home in Barbados to recoup with friends and family by her side.

A week after the incident, Brown just released his first statement to give a hint of clarity to the situation.

“Words cannot begin to express how sorry and saddened I am over what transpired. I am seeking the counseling of my pastor, my mother and other loved ones and I am committed, with God’s help, to emerging a better person. Much of what has been speculated or reported on blogs and/or reported in the media is wrong. While I would like to be able to talk about this more, until the legal issues are resolved, this is all I can say except that I have not written any messages or made any posts to Facebook, on blogs or any place else. Those posts or writings under my name are frauds.”

The statement was credited to the public relations firm Sitrick and Company, Inc., which Brown hired to maintain his once-positive reputation.

Brown is scheduled to appear in court on March 5.

What Jay-Z thinks

What I think

Until details of the situation can be confirmed, I feel that it is the wisest PR decision to remain open and honest about the situation with well thought out statements. Any slip of words in a high-profile case like this one has the potential to cause a media frenzy. But, (and that’s a big but) action should have been taken immediately following the incident.

For both Rihanna and Brown, now is the time for planning and decision making regarding endorsements and reputation building. The situation is being assessed and actions are being carefully thought out.

Although statements made by Brown and his publicist were wise, they should have been made a week ago. Because they didn’t exactly address the issues in a timely fashion, it gave people time to speculate and make accusations that could hurt far worse in the long run. Therefore, what is done from here on out is absolutely vital to his career and success in the future.

What else could be done to diffuse a case like this? Is there anything that the PR professionals missed here?

Leave a comment with your opinion.
